About St. Walter of
St. Walter of Pontoise lived in France during the eleventh
century. His birth name was Walter Gautier. St. Walter
was an educated man whose only desire was to serve God
and live as a Benedictine monk in isolation and prayer.
His hope was not to be however, because King Philip
I gave St. Walter the responsibilities of Abbot of a
new monastery in Pontoise.
St. Walter Resigned as Abbot of Pontoise
St. Walter petitioned Pope Gregory, handing in his resignation
but the pope demanded he continue in his position as
abbot. St. Walter of Pontoise finally accepted his fate
and served as abbot for the rest of his life. He fought
against the sinfulness and the evil of the clergy around
him and often prayed on his knees for the entire night.
The clergy became irate at the interference of St. Walter,
beating him and sending him to prison.
Because of St. Walter's imprisonment in a cell and being
a prisoner to his job, he was named St. Walter, patron
saint of prisoners and job related stress. Many Catholics
who feel locked into an unwanted job or career wear
a St. Walter of Pontoise medal or a St. Walter of Pontoise
necklace. They pray to carry on with their responsibilities
just as St. Walter had to do. Wearing a St. Walter of
Pontoise medallion reminds them to pray to Jesus Christ
for mercy and strength.
St. Walter Founded a Convent
St. Walter of Pontoise established a convent in reverence
for the Blessed Virgin Mary in Bertaucourt. He died
shortly after that around 1095 - 1099 on Good Friday.
The feast of St. Walter is celebrated on April 8.
Prayer for Job Stress
Oh my God, You know my weakness and failings, and
that without Your help I can accomplish nothing for
the good of souls, my own and others'. Grant me, therefore,
the help of Your grace. Grant it according to my particular
needs this day. Enable me to see the task You will set
before me in the daily routine of my life, and help
me work hard at my appointed tasks. Teach me to bear
patiently all the trials of suffering or failure that
may come to me today. Amen.
