About St. Ursula

It is believed that St. Ursula lived sometime during the fourth century. She was a British princess and was on a pilgrimage to Rome with eleven thousand virgin maidens. During the voyage, all of the maidens, including St. Ursula were murdered by the Huns.

Many legends have sprung up through the years with regard to St. Ursula but none of them can be proven. The important thing to remember about St. Ursula is that the Ursuline Order was founded in her honor for the purpose of educating Catholic girls.

St. Ursula Today

Many Catholic Schools today bear the name of St. Ursula. Many of the school children wear a St. Ursula medal or a St. Ursula pendant in honor of the saint who is the patron of their school.
Many Catholics give a St. Ursula necklace to a young girl attending Catholic school or when graduating from a Catholic School. The St. Ursula medal reminds them to continue their education and continue learning about life as a follower of Jesus.

Patron Saint Ursula

St. Ursula is the patron saint of students and the Ursulines. Many people who have St. Ursula as a patron recite the following prayer to God asking for the courage of St. Ursula and the martyred virgins.

Prayer for the Feast of Saint Ursula and Companion Virgin Martyrs

O God, Who hast granted to the virgins worthily consecrated to Thee, the courage to face, with Ursula as their leader, a wonderful fight whereby through the palm of martyrdom they reached the glory of Heavenly contemplation, we beseech Thee grant that we may be aided by the prayer of those who in this day after passing through the gates of death, Thou has made to triumph in Heaven. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Who liveth and reigneth with God the Father, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end. Amen.
