About St. Remigius

St. Remigius was born near Laon, France during the middle of the fifth century. It is said that a holy recluse who was blind had a vision while praying. He heard a voice saying, "…Know that the woman named Celina will give birth to a son to whom she will give the name of Remigius. To him God reserves the glory to save His people."

When Celina heard this prediction, she did not believe it because she was already an old woman. Celina did give birth to a son, however, and named him Remigius.

Saint Remigius went on to become a bishop at the age of 22 and to convert Clovis, King of the Franks to Christianity. Saint Remigius became the spiritual father of France.

St. Remigius Revered

Saint Remigius converted many Frankish people to Christianity. He build churches and ordained the first bishops in the area. Today, Catholics remember St. Remigius and work he did to spread Christianity throughout Gaul. Many Catholics wear a St. Remigius medal or a St. Remigius pendant to honor this great saint of France.

Prayer for the Feast of St. Remigius of Rheims

Grant, we beseech Thee, almighty God
that the solemn feast of blessed Remigius,
Thy Confessor and Bishop,
may both increase our devotion
and advance our salvation.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son,
Who liveth and reigneth with Thee
in the unity of the Holy Ghost, one God,
world without end. Amen.

Prayer of St. Remigius

O God, who by the teaching of your faithful servant and bishop Remigius turned the nation of the Franks from vain idolatry to the worship of you, the true and living God, in the fullness of the catholic faith; Grant that we who glory in the name of Christian may show forth our faith in worthy deeds; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.
