Who Is St. Madeline Sophie Barat
?
St. Madeline Sophie Barat was the foundress of the Society
of the Sacred Heart which was dedicated to the glory
of Jesus through His Sacred Heart. St. Madeline worked
under the guidance of the Fathers of the Faith which
her brother, Louis was a member. These priests modeled
their order after the ways of the Jesuits.
Father Varin, a priest of the Fathers of the Faith,
encouraged St. Madeline into establishing a second foundation
in Ste. Marie saying, "You will find there companions
who will help you, especially one and if there were
only that one, she would be worth seeking at the other
end of the world!"
St. Madeline Met with St. Marie, Rose
Philippine Duchesne
St. Madeline met St. Marie on December 13, 1804. St.
Marie became a novice in St. Madeline's Society of the
Sacred Heart and took her vows in 1805. St. Madeline
emphasized that the role of the Society of the Sacred
Heart was "We have a double purpose in our efforts:
our own perfection and the salvation of souls. We must
be saints."
St. Madeline Encouraged Prayer
St. Madeline encouraged prayer throughout the day as
a means of giving praise and glory to God. Many Catholics
today remember the words of St. Madeline as they wear
a St. Madeline medal or a St. Madeline pendant. The
St. Madeline necklace gives them the constant encouragement
to recite a prayer to St. Madeline to help them give
praise to the Holy Spirit. In her words:
"Few give themselves over to the Holy Spirit and
what a mistake we make in not being among the privileged
few! Believe me; it costs much more to stay in a miserable
mediocrity in which one belongs neither to God nor to
oneself. It is like swimming between two currents; it
is difficult and dangerous. Hurry up and plunge into
mid-stream. The Holy Spirit will then carry you and
you will get to port much more quickly." (Letters
5 vol. II 339)
