St. Lucia Patron Saint
St. Lucia is the patron saint of blindness and eye
problems. Many Catholics give a St. Lucia medal or a
St. Lucia charm to someone who has vision problems or
suffer from blindness. They also make monetary donations
to Foundations for the Blind and include a St. Lucia
medal or a St. Lucia pendant with their donation with
copies of the following prayers.
St. Lucia Prayer
Relying on Your goodness, O God, we humbly ask You,
through the intercession of St. Lucia, Virgin and Martyr,
to give perfect vision to our eyes, that they may serve
for Your greater honor and glory. St. Lucia, hear our
prayers and obtain our petitions. Amen.
Prayer to St. Lucia
Saint Lucia, you did not hide your light under a
basket, but let it shine for the whole world, for all
the centuries to see. We may not suffer torture in our
lives the way you did, but we are still called to let
the light of our Christianity illumine our daily lives.
Please help us to have the courage to bring our Christianity
into our work, our recreation, our relationships, our
conversation -- every corner of our day. Amen.
St. Lucia of Syracuse Martyr
St. Lucia of Syracuse was born in Sicily in 283 A.D.
She was raised to be a Christian by her wealthy parents.
St. Lucia vowed to remain a virgin for Jesus Christ
but her mother urged her to marry a pagan man. St. Lucia
prayed to be spared from marriage.
St. Lucia Visits the Tomb of St. Agatha
When St. Lucia's mother became sick, they went on a
pilgrimage to St. Agatha's tomb to pray for a cure.
St. Lucia's mother became well again and St. Lucia convinced
her that it was because she had vowed chastity to Jesus.
Her mother agreed that she wouldn't have to marry.
St. Lucia Arrested
The man who wanted to marry St. Lucia reported her to
the governor of Sicily for practicing Christianity.
She was ordered to make a sacrifice to the image of
the Emperor. When the guards tried to carry her to the
governor, she was so heavy with the Holy Spirit that
they couldn't move her. They tied her to a team of oxen
and still could not get her to move. Eventually, around
304, St. Lucia was killed with a sword through the throat
and her eyes were plucked out.
