St. Lazarus Patron Saint
St. Lazarus is mentioned in the Gospel of Luke as a
leper in Christ's parable about the rich man and the
leper. The rich man who dressed in fine robes and ate
extravagant foods died and went to Hell while St. Lazarus
ate scraps from the rich man's table that even the dog's
didn't want. When St. Lazarus died, he went to Heaven.
St. Lazarus is the patron saint of lepers, against leprosy,
the poor, the sick, and the Order of Saint Lazarus,
better known as the Knights of Malta
The Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem
The Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem was established
during the Crusades. The Order built a hospital to care
for the lepers in Jerusalem in 530.
The Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem continues its
humanitarian works today. Many Catholics who want to
offer their time to charitable works wear a St. Lazarus
medal or a St. Lazarus necklace for inspiration to care
for the sick and the needy.
Today, the Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem has expanded
their charitable works:
* Assist the handicapped and the elderly
* Donation of medical supplies to the care of leprosy
* The New Zealand order built Saint Lazarus Villages
for the elderly
* The Finland/Sweden order has a Volunteer Ambulance
Corps for drug addicts and support a medical mission
in Kenya.
* The order of Alsace operates dispensaries in Cameroon
* The Hungarian Order supports a Mission Hospital in
Taiwan and a school for handicapped children.
* The German and Luxembourg Order deliver needed supplies
to refugees in the Balkans'.
The Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem puts the tenets
of Christianity into practice each and every day. Members
strive to help the elderly, the sick, the poor, and
the handicapped. They continue to be dedicated to the
aid of lepers just as the original founders of the Order
were. The Order of Saint Lazarus are true followers
of Jesus Christ and the Christian lifestyle.
