Kateri Tekakwitha Patron Saint
Saint Kateri Tekakwitha was a Mohawk maiden who dedicated
her life to Chrisitanity and the Blessed Virgin. She
lived in a Franciscan mission after her family died
of smallpox where she was converted. Saint Kateri imposed
brutal mortifications on her body, sacrificing her suffering
up to Jesus. She died at the young age of twenty-four.
Saint Kateri Tekakwitha Canonized
After the death of Saint Kateri on April 17, 1680, witnesses
said that her face which had been scarred and pock marked
from smallpox miraculously became smooth and beautiful.
Her tombstone is engraved with the following words:
"Most beautiful flower that bloomed among the Indians."
Saint Kateri was canonized by Pope John Paul II on June
22, 1980. She became known as the Lily of the Mohawks.
She was the first Native American to be beatified and
canonized.

of Many Causes:
* Ecologists
* Environmentalists
* Exiles
* Loss of parents
* People in exile
* People ridiculed for their piety
* World Youth Day
Many Catholics who have St. Kateri for a patroness or
the youth of the world who celebrate World Youth Day
often wear a St. Kateri charm in honor of this Native
American saint. They pray for her strength and inspiration
in their own lives, wearing a St. Kateri medal as a
constant reminder to remain true to their faith.
St. Kateri Prayer
Jesus My Lord, Saint Kateri was the daughter of a
pagan Mohawk chief. A Jesuit missionary converted her
and then her relatives shunned her. They attacked her
beliefs, resented her for refusing to work on Sundays,
and insulted her prayer life. This did not deter her
from practicing the Faith. Now she is the patron of
people who are ridiculed for their piety. I ask her
to pray for the needs of those whose rights have been
abused, and to intercede for me when people reject the
way I express my faith or ridicule my methods of working
toward holiness. Saint Kateri, pray for us. Amen.
