St. Jerome and the Lion
There is a legend that surrounds St. Jerome, the fourth
century Doctor of the Church, translator of the Bible,
and theologian. During the Middle Ages, St. Jerome was
depicted as a hermit who lived in the wilderness or
in his study with a lion at his feet.
The legend of St. Jerome and the Lion takes place one
day when a lion limped up to St. Jerome and held up
his paw. St. Jerome gently took the lion's paw in his
hand and noticed a large thorn protruding from the paw.
St. Jerome carefully extracted the thorn, cleaned the
wound, and wrapped the lion's paw in bandages. The lion
is forever grateful to St. Jerome and remained at the
monastery doing chores for St. Jerome.
One of the lion's duties was to guard a donkey that
went out to collect firewood. The lion fell asleep and
the donkey was stolen by merchants. The monks assumed
that the lion ate the donkey and ordered him to do the
work of the donkey.
One day, as the lion was working at the donkey's jobs,
he saw the merchants who had stolen the donkey. The
donkey was tied to a cart, pulling a load of wares.
The lion roared and threatened the merchants and the
monks heard the lion's roars. They ran to the lion and
found their stolen donkey.
St. Jerome Prayer
The following prayer to Saint Jerome thanks him for
giving us the Bible, allowing Christians to follow the
path of Jesus and understand the foundations of faith.
Many Catholics wear a St. Jerome medal or a St. Jerome
charm while reciting the prayer, hoping for wisdom and
understanding of the Christian faith.
St. Jerome, great doctor of the Church who said "Not
to know the Scriptures is not to know Christ"
By God's grace you gave us the Latin Bible, help us
to always live the Gospel as Christ intended
Oh Blessed Jerome, you left your life of pleasure for
the service of Christ Help us to always put Christ first
over our own desires
As a fearless lion of the faith you never gave into
heresy or worldliness, intercede for us that we too
may stand strong
against the heresies that surround us, aid us in restoring
faith in the one true Church of Jesus Christ, through
the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
