About St. Jane of Valois
St. Jane de Valoise, also known as Jeanne de Valois,
was born in 1464 and died in 1505. She founded the Order
of Annonciades in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
St. Jane was the daughter of King Louis XI of France.
He was very disappointed at having a daughter and sent
St. Jane to be raised by a nanny. St. Jane was sickly
and deformed, suffering greatly from neglect and loneliness.
She sought solace in Jesus
Christ and the Blessed
Virgin Mary.
At the age of twelve, King Louis XI arranged for St.
Jane to marry his second cousin, Louis. When St. Jane's
husband became king, he filed for an annulment, humiliating
St. Jane with descriptions of her deformities. St. Jane
fought the annulment but lost to Louis. She humbly went
on her way saying, "God be praised! He has permitted
this that I may serve him better than I have up until
now."
St. Jane of Valois Canonized
After her marriage was dissolved, St. Jane founded the
Order of the Annonciades, saying "
on earth,
each of us, well knowing our own deficiencies, must
even so conform to the life of the Virgin Mary, to the
honour of God and the health of the world". She
took her vows and became a nun of the order, devoting
the rest of her life to prayer and the Blessed Mother.
St. Jane was canonized a saint in 1950 by Pope Pius
XII. The feast of St. Jane is celebrated on February
4.
Many Catholic girls are named after St. Jane or take
the name of St. Jane as their Confirmation name. Many
Catholics give a St. Jane medal or a St. Jane pendant
to girls who are named after the saint at their Baptisms
or Confirmations. Girls who wear the St. Jane necklace
are reminded of the suffering of St. Jane and her commitment
to the Blessed Virgin in spite of all her torments.
