Saint Isidore the Farmer
Biography
Saint Isidore the farmer was born in 1070 in Madrid,
Kingdom of Castile. His parents were very poor and worked
as farmers for a wealthy landowner named Juan de Vargas.
Saint Isidore the Farmer Miracles
As Saint Isidore grew, he also worked as a farmer for
Juan de Vargas. Saint Isidore attended Mass regularly
at a church in Madrid which caused fellow laborers to
report him to Juan. They told their master that Saint
Isidore was always late for work. Juan de Vargas went
to Saint Isidore and found him praying while an angel
miraculously plowed the fields for him.
Other Miracles of St. Isidore
On another occasion, Juan saw two angels plowing the
fields for Saint Isidore completing the work of three
men.
St. Isidore the farmer brought Juan de Vargas' daughter
back from the dead.
St. Isidore gave his master a drink of water from a
fountain that he caused to flow from the ground.
Saint Isidore Married a Saint
Saint Isidore the farmer married Saint Maria Torribia.
They had one son but he died while still a child. At
one point, their son fell into a deep well and through
the prayers of Saint Isidore and his wife; the water
in the well rose and lifted the boy up onto the ground.
Saint Isidore the Farmer's Death
Saint Isidore the Farmer died on May 15, 1130. He was
canonized by Pope
Gregory XV on March 12, 1622.
Saint Isidore is the patron saint of farmers and laborers.
April is the Feast of St. Isidore the Farmer.
Many Catholic farmers and day laborers wear a St. Isidore
medal or a St. Isidore pendant asking for his intercession
for an abundant harvest or to be successful in finding
work. Reciting a prayer to St. Isidore while wearing
a St. Isidore necklace offers people who work the land
the strength and fortitude to cultivate the soil, sow
the seeds, and harvest the crops.
Prayer to St. Isidore the Farmer
Dear Isidore, you know how normal it is to cultivate
the land for you were employed as a farm laborer for
the greater part of your life. Although you received
God's help materially through Angels in the field, all
farmers are aided spiritually to see the wonders God
has strewn on this earth. Encourage all farmers in their
labors and help them to feed numerous people. Amen.
