St. Ignatius of Loyola
Quotes
St. Ignatius of Loyola was born in 1491 and died in
1556. During his life, he founded the Society of Jesus,
also known as the Jesuits. He also developed the Spiritual
Exercises of St. Ignatius which involved self-examination,
prayer, and contemplation on the teachings and life
of Jesus Christ. St. Ignatius was a strict disciplinarian
and spiritual guide as can be seen in the following
quotes:
St. Ignatius Quotes:
* That we may be altogether of the same mind and
in conformity with the Church herself, if she shall
have defined anything to be black which appears to our
eyes to be white, we ought in like manner to pronounce
it to be black. For we must undoubtingly believe, that
the Spirit of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the Spirit
of the Orthodox Church His Spouse, by which Spirit we
are governed and directed to Salvation, is the same.
* Teach us to give and not to count
the cost
* Let me look at the foulness and ugliness of my body.
Let me see myself as an ulcerous sore running with every
horrible and disgusting poison.
* The safest and most suitable form of penance seems
to be that which causes pain in the flesh but does not
penetrate to the bones, that is, which causes suffering
but not sickness. So the best way seems to be to scourge
oneself with thin cords which hurt superficially, rather
than to use some other means which might produce serious
internal injury.
St. Ignatius Prayer for Generosity
Millions of today's Catholics recite the St. Ignatius
Prayer for Generosity striving to serve the needy and
discipline themselves to serve God. They wear a St.
Ignatius medal or a St. Ignatius necklace for inspiration
and courage to live a life of self-sacrifice and generosity.
