Saint Francis of Assisi
Patron Saint of Ecologists, Merchants, Pets
"Saint Francis of Assisi was the son of a rich
Italian cloth merchant. He lived a misspent youth as a street brawler,
and became an occasional soldier who wanted to be a knight. During
a war with neighboring Perugia, he was held in a dank, dark prison
where he had a conversion experience, including a reported message
from Christ calling him to leave this worldly life. Upon release,
St. Francis began taking his religion seriously.
He took the Gospels as the rule of his life, Jesus
Christ as his literal example. He dressed in rough clothes, begged
for his sustenance, and preached purity and peace. He visited hospitals,
served the sick, preached in the streets, and took all men and women
as siblings, all nature as his family. He began to attract followers
in 1209, and with Papal blessing, founded the Franciscans. St. Francis
did not try to abolish poverty, he tried to make it holy. When his
friars met someone poorer than they, they would eagerly rip off
the sleeve of their habit to give to the person. They worked for
all necessities and only begged if they had to. But Francis would
not let them accept any money. He told them to treat coins as if
they were pebbles in the road. When the bishop showed horror at
the friars' hard life, Francis said, "If we had any possessions
we should need weapons and laws to defend them." St. Francis
reasoned, what could you do to a man who owns nothing? You can't
starve a fasting man, you can't steal from someone who has no money,
you can't ruin someone who hates prestige. They were truly free.
In 1212 Clare of Assisi became his spiritual student,
which led to the founding of the Poor Clares. St. Francis visited
and preached to the Saracens during the 5th Crusade, he composed
songs and hymns to God and nature, lived with animals, worked with
his hands, cared for lepers, cleaned churches, and sent food to
thieves. In 1221 he resigned direction of the Franciscans.
While in meditation on Mount Alvernia in the Apennines
in September 1224, St. Francis received the stigmata, which periodically
bled during the remaining two years of his life.
Blessing of Pets:
Blessed are you, Lord God, maker of all living creatures.
You called forth fish in the sea, birds in the air and animals on
the land. You inspired St. Francis to call all of them his brothers
and sisters. We ask you to bless this pet. By the power of your
love, enable it to live according to your plan. May we always praise
you for all your beauty in creation. Blessed are you, Lord our God,
in all your creatures! Amen.
Prayer for Merchants
Most lovable and popular Saint, son of a go-getting and wealthy
merchant of Assisi, you discarded earthly possessions for the Savior
you loved so dearly and you won innumerable persons for Jesus. How
greatly we need in our day unselfish and just merchants. Inspire
them with the love of Christ for others and with the desire for
things that endure. Amen.
For a sick animal:
Heavenly Father, you created all things for your glory and made
us stewards of this creature. If it is your will, restore it to
health and strength. Blessed are you, Lord God, and holy is your
name for ever and ever. Amen.
Prayer of St Francis of Assisi
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen
