St. Elizabeth Ann Seton
Foundress
St. Elizabeth Seton founded the Sisters of Charity in
Emmitsburg, Maryland. She was the first native born
American ever to be canonized. St. Elizabeth was instrumental
in the establishment of Catholic Schools in America.
St. Elizabeth in Prayer
St. Elizabeth Ann Seton was a very devout woman. She
loved to read the scriptures and pray each day. St.
Elizabeth especially enjoyed the book of Psalms and
her favorite was the 23rd Psalm. She always wore a crucifix
around her neck right up to her death.
Wearing a St. Elizabeth Medal
Millions of Catholics wear a St. Elizabeth medal or
a St. Elizabeth charm, honoring America's first native
born saint. They pray the 23rd Psalm just as St. Elizabeth
did, growing stronger in the faith and love of God.
Many Catholic school children also wear a St. Elizabeth
necklace in memory of the woman who was so important
in the foundation of the Catholic school system in the
United States.
Prayer by St. Elizabeth Ann Seton
Lord
Jesus, Who was born for us in a stable, lived for
us a life of pain and sorrow, and died for us upon a
cross; say for us in the hour of death, Father, forgive,
and to Your Mother, Behold your child. Say to us, This
day you shall be with Me in paradise. Dear Savior, leave
us not, forsake us not. We thirst for You, Fountain
of Living Water. Our days pass quickly along, soon all
will be consummated for us. To Your hands we commend
our spirits, now and forever. Amen.
Prayer to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton
Lord God, you blessed Elizabeth Ann Seton with gifts
of grace as wife and mother, educator and foundress,
so that she might spend her life in service to your
people.
Through her example and prayers, may we,
whose Faith Community is dedicated in her honor, learn
to express our love for you in our love for all your
children.
We ask this through Christ, Our Lord.
Amen.
St. Elizabeth Ann Seton's Favorite
Prayer
St. Elizabeth's favorite prayer was the twenty-third
Psalm which she recited throughout her life:
The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He maketh
me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside
the still waters. 3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth
me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow
of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me;
thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. 5 Thou preparest
a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou
anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. 6 Surely
goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my
life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for
ever.
