St. Cosmas and St. Damian lived during the 3rd century.
They were twin brothers who dedicated themselves to
healing the sick and injured throughout Agea and Syria.
The two brothers took no money from their patients and
treated them with mercy and kindness.
It is said that St. Cosmas and Damian miraculously transplanted
the black leg of a recently deceased Ethiopian onto
the body of a white man as depicted in this painting.
St. Cosmas and Damian Persecuted
St. Cosmas & Damian were persecuted under Diocletian
and arrested. The two brothers were ordered to deny
their Christian faith but they remained steadfast in
their devotion to Jesus
Christ. St. Cosmas and St. Damian were martyred
along with their three younger brothers, Anthimus, Leontius,
and Euprepius.

The feast day of St. Cosmas and St. Damian is September
26 in the Eastern Orthodox Church, the Oriental Orthodox
Church, and the Eastern Catholic Church. September 27
is the feast day in the Roman Catholic Church.
