The Life of St. Bruno
Born to an important Hartenfaust family in Cologne,
Germany in 1330.
Studied at the local college or St. Cunibert
College.
Finished his studies at Reims where he became
proficient in the Holy Scripture and Divine sciences.
St. Bruno returned to Cologne and became a priest
at St. Cunibert around 1055.
St. Bruno returned to Reims to assist at the
school and in 1057 became headmaster of the school where
he remained for twenty years.
Appointed Chancellor of the church in Reims in
1075
In 1077, St. Bruno vowed to abandon the ways
of the world and devote himself entirely to his religion
but he could not do this until 1080.
St. Bruno went to the Bishop of Grenoble who
then told St. Bruno and six of his companions to go
to the snow covered mountains.
St. Bruno built a monastery in the mountains
where he lived in poverty, isolation, and retreat with
his six companions for six years.
St. Bruno returned to the world to defend reform.
St. Bruno was to be named Bishop but he refused
the office because he wanted to return to his isolated
monastery.
He was not given permission to leave for the
mountains but was given a new place for a retreat in
1091.
St. Bruno's new retreat was located in a wooded
valley in the Diocese of Squillace where he built a
chapel and wooden cabins. His hermitage was dedicated
to the Blessed Virgin.
St. Bruno's two retreats were the beginning of
the Carthusian religious order.
St. Bruno died on October 6, 1101. This day is
the feast of St. Bruno today.
Example of St. Bruno
Following the example of St. Bruno's devotion to the
Blessed Virgin and his willingness to give up worldly
pleasures for Jesus
is the ultimate way to follow the path of Jesus. Most
Christians today are unable to walk away from their
lives but they wear a St. Bruno medal or a St. Bruno
necklace as a symbol of their devotion to their faith.
They recite a prayer to St. Bruno, asking his help in
keeping their faith strong in spite of the world's temptations.
