Saint Brigid of Ireland
Saint Brigid is the most renowned female saint from
Ireland. She spent her days performing miracles, with
charitable works, and unselfishness. She was born in
Faughart around 454 A.D. Saint Brigid's mother was a
slave and her father was an Irish chieftan.
Saint Brigid was known to perform charitable works even
as a young child. Legend has it that Saint Brigid also
had powers to heal. Anyone who walked in her shadow
or touched her clothing was instantly healed.
Saint Brigid was also known as the Angel of Peace and
the following prayer to Saint Brigid was written in
her honor and for her intercession for peace. It was
taken from a prayer card from the Brigidine nuns of
Kildare.
Brigidine Prayer for Peace
Brigid,
You were a woman of peace,
You brought harmony where there was conflict.
You brought light to the darkness.
You brought hope to the downcast.
May the mantle of your peace
Cover those who are troubled and anxious,
And may peace be firmly rooted in our hearts
And in our world.
Inspire us to act justly and to reverence
All God has made.
Brigid, you were a voice for the wounded
And the weary,
Strengthen what is weak within us,
Calm us into a quietness that heals
And listens.
May we grow each day into greater
Wholeness in mind, body and spirit.
Amen.
Honoring Saint Brigid
Saint Brigid of Ireland is honored by Christians today
by praying for her intercession for peace and tolerance
a violent world. Wearing a Saint Brigid medal reminds
believers to walk in peace with one another and follow
the way of Jesus
Christ. A Saint Brigid pendant is an outward symbol
of love for one another and to spread the love of Jesus
to the entire world.
