About Saint Blaise
Saint Blaise (Blasé) is considered one of the
Fourteen Holy Helpers of Christianity. He was the Bishop
of Sebaste in Armenia during the third century. At this
time, Licinius was persecuting the Christians, so Saint
Blaise went into the mountains of Argeus to escape.
He lived in a cave as a hermit and tended to hurt and
sickly wild animals.
While in the mountains, St. Blaise was confronted with
the prince's knights who were hunting in the region.
They were astonished by the wild animals gathered around
St. Blaise. The knights returned to the prince and told
him of St. Blaise. The prince sent more knights to bring
Saint Blaise back to him.
It is told that Jesus appeared to Saint Blaise, telling
him to let himself be taken by the knights as a sacrifice
to Him. Saint Blaise followed the will of Jesus
and was taken prisoner.
Saint Blaise Saves a Boy
On the way to the prince, the knights and Saint Blaise
came upon a boy and his mother. The boy was choking
on a fish bone and Saint Blaise saved her son. It is
because of this event that Saint Blaise is the Patron
Saint of throat ailments and Blessing of the Throats
is done on Saint Blaise Feast Day every year, Feb. 3.
Believers today wear a Saint Blaise necklace or a Saint
Blaise pendant to ward off choking and throat problems.
Christians also recite the prayer to St. Blaise, as
well.
Saint Blaise Prayer
O glorious Saint Blaise, who by thy martyrdom didst
leave to the Church a precious witness to the faith,
obtain for us the grace to preserve within ourselves
this divine gift, and to defend, without human respect,
both by word and example, the truth of that same faith,
which is so wickedly attacked and slandered in these
our times. Thou who didst miraculously restore a little
child when it was at the point of death by reason of
an affliction of the throat, grant us thy mighty protection
in like misfortunes; and, above all, obtain for us the
grace of Christian mortification together with a faithful
observance of the precepts of the Church, which may
keep us from offending Almighty God. Amen.
Prayer of St. Blaise
O God, deliver us through the intercession of Thy
holy bishop and martyr St. Blaise, from all evil of
soul and body, especially from all ills of the throat;
and grant us the grace to make a good confession in
the confident hope of obtaining Thy pardon, and ever
to praise with worthy lips Thy most holy name. Through
Christ our Lord. Amen.
