The Original Brown Roman
Catholic Scapular
On July 16, 1251 the Blessed Virgin appeared to St.
Simon Stock, the head of the Carmelite Order. The Carmelites
lived in seclusion on Mount Carmel in the Holy Land.
Eventually, the Carmelites spread throughout Europe
and began working among the people. St. Simon was instrumental
in guiding the friars through the great changes in the
order. St. Simon's prayed for the Blessed Virgin's help
during the difficult transitions and she appeared to
him, presenting him with the scapular.
Our Lady's Promise
Our
Lady of Mt. Carmel made a promise to St.
Simon saying, "Receive, My beloved son,
this habit of thy order: this shall be to thee and to
all Carmelites a privilege, that whosoever dies clothed
in this shall never suffer eternal fire .... It shall
be a sign of salvation, a protection in danger, and
a pledge of peace."
Our Lady also appeared to Pope
John XXII, making another promise for believers
who wore the Brown Scapular, "I, the Mother
of Grace, shall descend on the Saturday after their
death and whomsoever I shall find in Purgatory, I shall
free, so that I may lead them to the holy mountain of
life everlasting."
The Scapular Medal
Recently, the Catholic Scapular medal has become an
acceptable form or receiving the benefits of the Carmelite
Brown Scapular. As long as the three conditions of the
scapular are met, Catholics will receive all the blessings
of the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel.
* Wear the scapular at all times
* Observe chastity according to your life
* Pray the Rosary
Scapular medals are convenient for all modern day Catholics.
They are available in a variety of Scapular medal jewelry
for men, women, and children. A sterling silver Scapular
medal is ideal for everyday wear for both casual and
business dress. A Scapular medal charm is wonderful
for a girl's bracelet, giving her the Scapular blessings
in a beautiful gold Scapular medal.
