After Constantine conquered the Roman Empire in 325 AD and made Christianity the official religion, the cross rose in popularity as a symbol of the Christian faith.

As the legend goes, Emperor Constantine’s mother, Helena, found the cross. On May 3rd 328 she found the cross buried deep underground along with the other two crosses. One of the crosses was recognized as the cross of Jesus when a sick woman became miraculously healed after she touched it.

The two forms of crosses are the Greek cross (four equal length arms) and the Latin cross (shorter cross bar raised above a longer center). All the religious Christian cross designs are variants of these two forms and there are said to be about 400 design variants of the Christian cross.
