Cursillio Crucifix

The Cursillo Movement

Shortly after World War II the Cursillo movement began in Spain as a Catholic group. The movement became popular in the United States in the 1960’s and today is a Christian movement rather than just Catholic. The Cursillo crosses are visible signs to the world and a reminder to the wearer of the precepts of participation in the movement. Often, but not mandatory, the reverse side of the Cursillo cross pendant is inscribed: “Christ is counting on you”.

INRI on the Cursillo Cross

A feature always present on the front of the Cursillo cross image are the letters INRI depicted above the halo around the head of the crucified Jesus. Given the meaning of the four letters, it is a statement of why Jesus was unjustly crucified. The historic origin of the four letters is based in Latin and supposedly represents 4 actual words Pontius Pilate wrote on a sign and had nailed to the cross. INRI is the first letter of each word Pilate wrote on his sign: Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.

a Friday through Sunday. The cursillo begins with silent prayer and meditation by the participant. The days consist of inspirational speakers, Mass, prayer, reflection, group meetings and community meals. The first day is for the participant to get to know and appreciate himself/herself. Saturday is for using knowledge of self and how it fits with a loving God, and Sunday is for focus on how to do God’s will in the community setting. Many participants proudly wear the Cursillo cross as a constant reminder of their Christian responsibility in the community.
