Surfer Cross

The Origin of the Surfer’s Cross

The surfer cross originated in the 1960’s when surfers began wearing a cross designed after the Iron Cross of Germany. It began when surfers wore trophies brought home by their fathers from WWII.

Eventually, an actual surfer’s cross was developed by Ed Roth who placed a surfer on the front of the cross. The cross is supposed to bring sets of large waves to the surfers who wear it.
Surfer Cross Pendant

The German Iron Cross was designed after the cross that the Teutonic Knights wore during the Crusades of the 14th century. It has its roots in Christianity but most people are not aware that the surfer’s cross or the Iron Cross originated in Christianity of the Middle Ages.

The Surfer Cross Today

Today’s surfer cross is not viewed in quite the same way as the 1960’s. At that time, the cross was a sign of a surfer’s free way of life, breaking away from their parent’s conservative life.

Today, the surfer cross is considered as a good luck piece to keep the surfer safe while catching the waves. It is more of a religious symbol now than it was in the 60’s. Wearing the surfer cross around the neck is a symbol of asking Jesus to watch over the surfer while in the water, preventing any accidents or death.

The Surfer Cross as a Gift
The surfer cross is not only for surfers. It is a simple, silver cross that anyone can wear. The cross is perfect for gifts for any religious occasion like First Communion or Confirmation. It is designed in a contemporary style, yet still holds the tradition of the Teutonic Knight of the Middle Ages. Surfer Cross Necklace
This also is ideal as a gift to wedding attendants and can be engraved with the date of the wedding and the names of the bride and groom. The surfer cross pendant is a reminder of a special wedding day and the grace of God upon the wedding party.
