Irene Cross

Who Is Saint Irene of Chrysovolantos?

St. Irene was born in Cappadocia to a noble family.  She was betrothed to the heir of the imperial kingdom but on a trip to Constantinople, she vowed to give herself only to God.  Saint Irene turned away from the riches of the world and entered the Chrysovolantos monastery.  While in the monastery, St. Irene devoted herself to prayer.  She inspired many women to enter the convent and converted many people to faith in God by her humble ways, the love she showed to all, and her enthusiasm in her faith.  The Irene Cross was created to honor this holy woman.

St. Irene’s Prayer for Strength Against the Evil One

"O Blessed Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit), everlasting God, at the intercession of Your most holy Mother and in the presence of the archangels, their armies, the celestial powers and all Your saints, help Your servant. Deliver me from the assaults of the devil."

The Lord answered St. Irene’s prayers and gave her these powers:

  • Casting out demons\
  • Visions of the future
  • Levitation
  •  Predicting when people would die.

St. Irene’s Final Prayer before Dying

"Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, the Good Shepherd who has saved and fed us with Your own most precious Blood, I deliver in Your Holy Hands this little flock. Hide it under the shadow of Your wings (Psalm 90), protect it from the wiles of the devil for Yours is the Kingdom, the Power and the Glory and to You we give thanks forever and ever."

When St. Irene finished praying, angels appeared to her.  She smiled at the angels with a radiant glow on her face.  St. Irene then died in her sleep.
Christians still say the prayers of St. Irene and wear the Irene Cross as a symbol of giving up riches and living life of fasting, prayer, and sacrifice.
