St. Francis and the Franciscans

St. Francis was listening to a sermon in 1209 and he was so moved by the gospel reading that he decided to literally live the gospel.  The reading that affected him so deeply was Matthew 10:7-10.

“And as you go, preach, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ 8 “Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. Freely you received, freely give. 9 “Do not acquire gold, or silver, or copper for your money belts, 10 or a bag for your journey, or even two coats, or sandals, or a staff; for the worker is worthy of his support.”

 St. Francis and the Franciscans

Eleven other men joined St. Francis by the end of the first year.  The men lived in a deserted house near Assisi.  The brothers spent their time ministering in the mountain areas if Umbria.  Francis lived a life of poverty, simplicity, peacefulness, and respect for all living things.  He put all of his needs in the hands of Jesus.  Eventually, the order of the Franciscans was developed to follow in the lifestyle of St. Francis.

The Franciscan Coat of Arms

The Franciscan Coat of Arms displays two arms crossing one another in front of the crucifix of Jesus.  One arm is Jesus’ and the other a Franciscan brother.  Both hands hold the wound of the nail hole inflicted at the crucifixion.  The arms and crucifix are resting in a cloud.  The image is often referred to as the Franciscan crucifix.

 Christian Followers of St. Francis
Following the way of St. Francis does not mean having to join the Franciscan Order.  Christians who live humble, peaceful, and simplified everyday lives with their families, friends, and co-workers are living a Franciscan lifestyle.  Wearing the Franciscan Coat of Arms is an ideal way to show belief in St. Francis’ way of Christ.  The Franciscan Coat of Arms was created into the Franciscan Cross which displays the same type of cross and hands.  It is a different type of crucifix, unique in its style and its message.  The Franciscan crucifix also makes a wonderful gift for any Christian who is a follower of Jesus Christ and believes in his message.
