Canterbury Cross

The Origin of the Canterbury Cross

Canterbury, England is famous for its many churches, many of which have been standing since the 1500’s.  The most famous of the churches is Canterbury Cathedral where St. Thomas Becket was assassinated by King Henry’s men on December 29, 1170.  Near the center of the town, a small brooch was dug up in 1867 on St. George’s Street.  This pendant, known as the Canterbury Cross or the Becket Cross, remained buried for over a thousand years and is now one of the most famous images of a Christian cross in the world.  Its design is of Saxon origin and dates back to 850 A.D. when all of England was organized into a diocese.  Irish monks introduced Christianity to Britain around 563 A.D.

Canterbury Cross Jewelry Today

Today, replicas of the Canterbury Cross are made into a variety of jewelry pieces. One of the most stunning is the Canterbury Cross Pendant.  The other is the Canterbury Cross Necklace.  These Canterbury Cross jewelry items are detailed replicas of the original Canterbury Cross brooch.  They are usually engraveable which makes them the perfect, personalized religious gifts for First Communion, Confirmation, and even for wedding attendants or bride and groom gifts.  The Canterbury Cross pendant is available in gold and sterling silver from most religious jewelry stores.  Today’s Canterbury Crosses have the medieval style, yet are timeless in their beauty.  One is reminded of the turbulent history of Christianity and how it beat the odds to survive over Canterbury Cross Pendant
