The Byzantine Saints
  • † St. Irene – She disdained all worldly pleasures and sought a solitary and contemplative life, secluded from all distractions of the world. She gave all her necklaces and jewels to the poor and entered the Convent of Chrysolbalanton to offer her services to God. She cut off all her hair and wore ragged clothes in order to renew her soul. She eventually became the Abbess of the convent and received the gift of second sight and levitation from God. A Byzantine cross was created in her honor.

  • † St. Christine – This medieval Byzantine saint was imprisoned by her father for refusing the nobles who wished to marry her. While imprisoned, she had a vision of an angel and then she smashed the pagan icons her father had given her. Her father flogged her and sent her to prison. Angels comforted her and saved her life when she was thrown in a lake with a stone tied to her. The Byzantine cross created in her honor was exquisitely designed.

  • † St. Xenia – This medieval Byzantine saint gave away all her possessions after her husband died. She wandered the streets of St. Petersburg in Russia for forty-five years, wearing her husband’s clothes and referring to herself by his name. She sacrificed everything she had for God and trusted in Him to provide for her needs. God gave her the gifts to see into the past and into the future. A Byzantine cross pendant was also created in her name.

  • † St. Olga – After her husband’s death, this medieval Byzantine woman was the first ruler of Kiev Rus to convert to Christianity. She spent her life trying to spread the teachings of Jesus Christ throughout the country. She was considered to be an equal to the twelve apostles of Christ. Byzantine crosses are still worn in her honor.
