Dagmar Cross

Queen Dagmar of Denmark

The Queen Dagmar Legend
Queen Dagmar was beautiful and loved by the people. She spent her days helping the Danish people with acts of charity.

A Danish Quote about Queen Dagmar:

"She came without burden, she came with peace;
She came the good peasant to cheer"

Even ballads were written in honor of Queen Dagmar. The most famous of these ballads is Dronning Dagmar ligger I Ribe syg which translates: Queen Dagmar lies ill in Ribe.) To this very day, the Danish people sing this ballad when the Ribe Cathedral bells ring at noon and 3pm daily.

Dronning Dagmar ligger I Ribe syg Ballad

The ancient Danish ballad tells of Queen Dagmar’s sickness and the 120 kilometer ride of King Valdemar and his one hundred men from Skanderborg. The king was trying to reach his queen at Riberhus before she died. The king rode so fast to Queen Dagmar that his men fell behind. The following is an excerpt from the ballad:

When the king rode out of Skanderborg
Him followed a hundred men.
But when he rode over Ribe Bridge,
The king was riding alone

Queen Dagmar was already dead when King Valdemar reached her death bed. Miraculously, Queen Dagmar awakened requested three things from the King:

  • Give freedom to all the prisoners and discharge all the outlaws of their debts
  • Do not wed Princess Berengaria (Bengerd) of Portugal
  • Ensure that their youngest son Knud becomes King of Denmark.

King Valdemar released those in prison but two years after Queen Dagmar’s death, he wed Berengaria, the daughter of Portugal’s, King Sancho I.

The Dagmar Cross
The Dagmar Cross, also known as Dagmarkorset in Denmark is a beautiful piece of jewelry named in memory of Queen Dagmar. The original cross was discovered in the grave of Queen Dagmar in Ringsted. It was created in the Byzantine style of crosses and can be viewed in Copenhagen’s National Museum of Denmark.
Dagmar Cross Jewelry

The Dagmar Cross is most popular as a girl’s christening gift in Denmark but it is also traditional to give the Dagmar Cross for confirmation and weddings, as well. The tradition of giving the Dagmar Cross as gifts has grown internationally and replicas of the original cross have been created into fine jewelry.
