St. Zita

Life of Saint Zita

  • Saint Zita was born near Lucca, Italy in 1212.  She became a servant when only one year old in a home owned by the Fatinelli’s.  Her employers despised the little girl and often beat her and gave her the hardest work to do.
  •  In spite of the physical abuse, Saint Zita remained spiritually serene.  She loved those who hurt her and respected her abusers.  This humility won over her fellow servants and her abusive employers, as well.

  • Saint Zita was given the responsibility or running the affairs of the household.  The prayerful ways of Saint Zita brought religion back to the Fatinelli family.
  • Saint Zita got up hours before anyone else in the household every morning.  She used this time for prayer and to go to Mass.  The rest of her day was spent in diligent household work.
  • It is said that one day, Saint Zita left her duty of baking bread to deliver food to the poor.  When the family heard of this, they went to the kitchen and found angels baking more bread.
  • Saint Zita died on April 27, 1272 in the Fatinelli home where she began her employment at one year of age.  A star shone above her attic room at the time of her death.
  • Over one hundred and fifty miracles have been attributed to Saint Zita.  She was canonized a saint in 1696.
  • The feast of Saint Zita is celebrated on April 27.  It is a tradition to bake a loaf of bread on Saint Zita’s Feast Day.

Many Catholics today wear a Saint Zita medal or a Saint Zita necklace as a reminder to follow the example of this pious saint.  Wearing a Saint Zita pendant reminds people to pray for a peaceful soul in spite of the stress of everyday life.
