About St. Rose of Lima

  • V Saint Rose of Lima was born in Lima, Peru on April 20, 1586.
  • V She was named Isabel Flores de Olivia on her Baptism day.
  • V The father of Saint Rose was Gaspar Flores.  He worked as an harquebusier.
  • V The mother of Saint Rose was Maria de Olivia.
  • V Saint Rose’s nickname was Rosa because a servant reported that he saw her face turn into a rose when she was a baby.

 Saint Rose of Lima

  • Saint Rose of Lima imposed severe penances upon herself and fasted three days a week.  She also cut off her hair when someone mentioned her beauty.  Saint Rose went so far as to scar her face with lye and pepper.
  • Saint Rose received Communion every day and took a vow of chastity against her parents’ wishes.
  • Saint Rose fasted daily and stopped eating meat.
  • She worked diligently for the poor and the sick in her community.  Saint Rose brought the downtrodden home to take care of them.
  • Saint Rose went to the market with needlepoint she created with her own hands and beautiful flowers she grew.  She used the proceeds to support her home and for works of charity.
  • Saint Rose built a small grotto where she went every night to pray and do penance.  Eventually, she never left the grotto except to receive Communion.
  • Saint Rose of Lima lived for eleven years in the grotto, suffering because of her self-imposed martyrdom.  She died on August 24, 1617.  She was thirty-one years old.
  • Saint Rose of Lima was canonized on April 2, 1671 by Pope Clement IX.
  • The Feast of Saint Rose of Lima is celebrated on August 20, 23, 30, depending upon the country.
 Saint Rose of Lima Venerated

Saint Rose of Lima is venerated by Catholics today, especially in Latin America.  She was the first saint of the Americas.  Many Catholics wear a Saint Rose medal, Saint Rose charm, or a Saint Rose of Lima pendant in her honor.  They pray for the intercession of Saint Rose of Lima to give them the strength to resist temptation, vanity, and conceit.
