About Saint Marie Magdalen Postel
  • Saint Marie Magdalen Postel was born in Barfleur, France on November 28, 1756.  Her baptized name was Julia Frances Catherine.
  • When Saint Marie was eighteen years old, she established a school for girls in the town where she was born.
  • During the French Revolution, the school that Saint Marie started was closed.  At that time she began sheltering fugitive priests in her home.
  • Saint Marie continued to hide the priests until Napoleon and the Pope signed the Concordat in 1801.

  • Saint Marie took her vows in 1807 and started a congregation with three other sisters.
  • In 1815, Saint Marie Magdalen moved to Tamersville, France and received the Abbey of St. Sauveur le Vicomte for her congregation which was named Sisterhood of the Christian Schools of Mercy.
  • Saint Marie died on July 16.
  • In 1925, Saint Marie Magdalen Postel was canonized a saint by Pope Pius XI for her holy life and miracles associated with her.
  • The feast of Saint Marie is celebrated on July 16.  On this day, many Catholics wear a Saint Marie medal or a Saint Marie pendant in honor of this selfless woman who protected many priests in such a violent time in the history of France.
  • Saint Marie is also known as Saint Mary Magdalen Postel and Saint Julie Postel, and Saint Marie Madeleine Postel.

Saint Marie is the patron saint of anyone named Mary or variations of Mary.  Many people named Mary wear a Saint Marie medal in her honor or give a Saint Marie necklace as a baptism gift for girls taking the name Mary.  It is also traditional to give a Saint Marie charm or a Saint Marie medal to a girl taking a variation of the name Mary for Confirmation.
