Saint Maria Goretti Biography

  • Saint Maria Goretti was born in Corinaldo, Italy on October 16, 1890.  She was named Maria Teresa Goretti.
  • The family of Saint Maria Goretti was very destitute and the entire family worked on other people’s farms.  They were a very close, religious family.
  • Saint Maria Goretti’s father died when she was nine years old.  Her mother and brother continued to work in the fields and Maria worked as a housekeeper on the farms.

  • Maria and her family moved to Le Ferrierre and lived at a place called La Cascina Antica with another family named the Serenellis.
  • Twenty year old, Alessandro Serenelli came into the house on July 5, 1902 and found Saint Maria Goretti sewing.  She was eleven years old at the time.  He threatened to kill her if she did not submit to him.  As he tried to rape her, she screamed that it was a mortal sin and that she would rather die than to lose her virginity to him.  He stabbed her eleven times but she continued to crawl toward the door and he stabbed her three more times.
  • Saint Maria Goretti died in the hospital twenty hours after she was attacked.  It is said that she forgave Alessandro and hoped she would see him in Paradise one day.
  • Saint Maria Goretti was canonized by Pope Pius XII on June 24, 1950.  Her mother was present at the canonization.  Her body is entombed in the south of Rome.
  • Saint Maria Goretti feast day is celebrated on July 6.
  • Saint Maria Goretti was named the patron saint of victims of crime, teenage girls, youth, and Children of Mary.

Saint Maria Goretti Today

Saint Maria Goretti is honored by today’s Catholics as a young girl martyred for her love for Jesus Christ.  Catholics wear a Saint Maria Goretti medal, honoring a girl murdered trying to preserve her chastity.

Many Catholics give a Saint Maria Goretti charm or a Saint Maria Goretti necklace to teenage girls who have been raped or attacked.  They hope the Saint Maria Goretti jewelry will offer strength to these teenage victims and help them to know the love of Jesus.
