St. Katherine Drexel

About St. Katharine Drexel

  • Saint Katharine Drexel was born in 1858 to a wealthy family in Philadelphia.

  • She became devoted to loving God and her neighbor.

  • Saint Katharine Drexel dedicated her life to helping Native Americans and Black people.

  • The Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament for Indians and Colored People was founded by Saint Katharine Drexel. For the most part, they worked in the West and Southwest United States, assisting the oppressed Native Americans and blacks.

  • Saint Katharine Drexel used all of her money to pay for over sixty missions and schools throughout the United States to educate the oppressed of the country.

  • Pope John Paul II canonized Katharine Drexel on October 1, 2000. She was the second American born saint after Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton.

  • The feast of Saint Katharine Drexel is celebrated on March 3. On this day, many Native American and Black Catholics wear a Saint Katharine Drexel medal or a Saint Katharine Drexel pendant in honor of this selfless defender of racial injustice. Catholics who continue the work of Saint Katharine Drexel against racial injustice wear a Saint Katharine Drexel necklace reminding them to fight injustice each and every day.

St. Katharine Drexel Prayer

Ever-loving God, You called Saint Katharine Drexel to teach the message of the Gospel and to bring the life of the Eucharist to the African American and Native American peoples.
By her prayers and example, enable us to work for justice among the poor and the oppressed, and keep us undivided in love in the Eucharistic community of Your Church.
Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
(From the Common of Virgins or of Holy Women.)
