St. gertrude of Nivelles

About St. Gertrude

St. Gertrude of Nivelles was born in 626 A.D. to Pepin I of Landen and the sister of Saint Begga. When she was ten years old, her father arranged a marriage to the son of Dagobert I for St. Gertrude. She refused to marry the man and vowed to dedicate her life to Jesus Christ.

St. Gertrude Named Abbess

St. Gertrude was named the abbess of a monastery that her mother built in Nivelles after the death of her husband. Her mother lived there as a nun, also. St. Foillan and St. Ultan, Irish monks, visited the monastery on a regular basis. St. Gertrude and her mother gave them land to build a monastery.

St. Gertrude Dies

St. Gertrude Nevilles died at the age of thirty-two in 659 A.D. She suffered in a weakly state from her constant fasting and lack of sleep. She died during the sacrifice of the Mass and was named a saint shortly after.

St. Gertrude Patron Saint

St. Gertrude is the patron saint of cats, against mice, mental illness, and traveler. Many cat lovers wear a St. Gertrude medal or a St. Gertrude charm, praying for the safety and health of their beloved pets, abandoned cats, and laboratory cats.

St. Gertrude Prayer

St. Gertrude, grant a gentle end,
To cats who suffer at the hands of men.
Cats blinded, scalded, posioned, maimed,
Some, lost pets, seized when unclaimed.
St. Gertrude, hear my prayer this night
And grant them surcease from their plight.

Prayer to St. Gertrude for a Night-Prowling Cat

St. Gertrude, keep my cat all night
From trap or poison, thorn or bite,
From speeding cars and thieving men,
And bring him safely home again.
