St. Genevieve

About St. Genevieve

  • St. Genevieve was born around the year 419 A.D. in Nanterre, near Paris.

  • The parents of St. Genevieve were Severus and Gerotia. Some historians say they were peasants while others believe they were wealthy citizens.

St Genevieve Patron Saint
  • St. Germain of Auxerre was preaching in Nanterre and saw St. Genevieve. He told her parents that she would lead a holy life and inspire many women to devote themselves to God. He gave St. Genevieve a medal with a cross engraved on it. He told her to wear the medal instead of jewelry.

  • When the parents of St. Genevieve died, she became dedicated to charitable works and she fasted and abstained from eating meat. She did this for thirty years.

  • St. Genevieve had many visions but her neighbors were jealous of her and pronounced her a fraud. Her enemies attempted to drown her but she was saved by St. Germain.

  • St. Genevieve inspired the people to put their trust in God when Attila and the Huns attacked the village in 451. The people followed her advice and they were spared.

  • St. Genevieve drafted plans to build a church in Paris venerating St. Peter and St. Paul. Her body was placed in this church after her death in 502 A.D. Many miracles are recorded as taking place at her tomb.

  • St. Genevieve patron saint of Paris is venerated by the Roman Catholics and the Eastern Orthodox Church.

Prayer to St. Genevieve

Many Catholics wear a St. Genevieve medal or a St. Genevieve necklace asking for her intercession in the protection of their country and the strength to perform works of charity for the sick and the poor.

St. Genevieve Prayer

Saint Genevieve, you who by the days before, penance and prayer, ensured the protection of Paris, intercede near God for us, for our country, for the devoted Christian hearts. You who cured the sick and fed the hungry, obtain the light of God and make us stronger to reject temptation. You who had the concern of the poor, protect the sick, the abandoned, and the unemployed. You who resisted the armies and encouraged the besieged, give us the direction for truth and justice. You who through the centuries never ceased taking care of your people, help us to keep the teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ. May your example be for us, an encouragement to always seek God and serve him through our brothers and sisters. Amen.
