St. Gemma Galgani

Life of St. Gemma Galgani

  • Saint Gemma Galgani was born on March 12, 1878 in Borgo Nuovo, Italy. Her birth name was Maria Gemma Umberta Pia Galgani and she was the fifth of eight children.

  • A short time after her birth, Saint Gemma Galgani and her family relocated to a large home in Lucca.

  • Saint Gemma’s mother, Aurelia, contracted tuberculosis so Saint Gemma was placed in a nursery school at the age of two. The owners of the nursery school, Elena and Ersilia Vallini noticed that Saint Gemma Galgani was exceptionally intelligent.

  • The family of Saint Gemma Galgani suffered from many tragedies: Aurelia died of tuberculosis, Saint Gemma’s brother Carlo died young, Saint Gemma’s brother Gino died from tuberculosis, and her younger sister Giulia also died young.

  • Saint Gemma Galgani studied at Saint Zita School.

  • Saint Gemma applied to become a Passionist but was rejected because of poor health.

  • When Saint Gemma Galgani was twenty years old, she contracted spinal meningitis. She was healed and attributed the miracle cure to the Sacred Heart of Jesus through her prayers to St. Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows and St. Marguerite Marie Alacoque.

  • Saint Gemma Galgani began showing the wounds of stigmata on June 8, 1899 when she was twenty-one. At this time, she also began speaking with her guardian angel, Jesus, and Our Lady. Because of her failing health, she was encouraged to pray for her stigmata to go away and the wounds disappeared.

  • Saint Gemma Galgani was canonized in 1940 and is the patron saint of students and pharmacists.
