St. Deborah

Saint Deborah Prophetess and Judge

Saint Deborah (Deborra) is the one and only female Judge mentioned in the Old Testament during the period of pre-monarchic Israel.  Her feats are written in the book of Judges, chapters four and five.

The story of Saint Deborah in chapter 5 of Judges is known as the Song of Deborah.  This chapter is in the form of poetry and dates back as far as the eighth century B.C.

Saint Deborah’s Life

All that is known of Saint Deborah is found in the book of Judges.  She was a Judge and a poet.  She sat under a palm tree and rendered her judgements in Ephraim.

(Judges 4:5)  5 She held court under the Palm of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in the hill country of Ephraim, and the Israelites came to her to have their disputes decided.

Saint Deborah is often referred to as the Mother of Israel.

Saint Deborah Prophecies Victory

Saint Deborah predicted the victory of the Israelites over the Sisera army of Egypt and the forty years of peace that followed. (Judges 5:31)

31 "So may all your enemies perish, O LORD!
But may they who love you be like the sun
when it rises in its strength."
Then the land had peace forty years.

Saint Deborah Remembered

Saint Deborah is remembered today for her glorious prophecy of forty years of peace for Israel. She was instrumental in the victory in the Battle of Thabor.  Saint Deborah told Barak when to attack the enemy, and to go down from the mountains, fighting Sisara’s army on the plain.  Israel was delivered from the enemy in the heroic battle.

Many people today remember the Mother of Israel, wearing a Saint Deborah medal or a Saint Deborah pendant and reading the Song of Deborah.  They remember this great prophet of God and Judge and the role she played in the history of Israel.
