St. Clare of Assisi

About St. Clare

St. Clare of Assisi was born on July 16, 1194 in Assisi, Italy.  She died on August 11, 1253.  Her parents were Ortolana, a devout Christian and Favorino Scifi, the Count of Sasso-Rosso.

When St. Clare’s parents promised her in marriage to a rich man of the town, St. Clare ran to St. Francis who accepted her into religious life.  She lived with the Benedictine nuns for a short amount of time.

St. Clare moved to the San Damiano Church which St. Francis had rebuilt and other women followed St. Clare to the church.  The women lived austere lives and were known as the Poor Ladies.

St. Clare of Assisi founded the new religious order, Order of San Damiano at the church.  They devoted themselves to manual labor and prayer.  This religious order became one of the most important orders of the time.  After the death of St. Clare, the order became known as the Order of St. Clare.

St Clare Patron Saint
St. Clare Canonized

Pope Alexander IV canonized St. Clare as Saint Clare of Assisi on August 15, 1255.  St. Clare’s remains are buried beneath the Basilica of St. Clare which was erected in her honor in 1260.

St. Clare Miracle

When St. Clare became too ill to attend Mass, the Mass would appear on her wall where she could watch it.  She became known as the patron saint of television because of her vision of the Mass on the wall.

Saint Clare of Assisi Prayer

God of Mercy, You inspired Saint Clare with the love of poverty. By the help
of her prayers, may we follow Christ in poverty of spirit and come
to the joyful vision of your glory in the kingdom of heaven. We ask this
through Our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, Who lives and reigns with You
and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

Many Catholics recite the Saint Clare of Assisi prayer and wear the St. Clare medal as they go about their day.  The St. Clare necklace and prayer are reminders to live a humble life in the service of Jesus Christ.
