St. Catherine Laboure

About Saint Catherine of Laboure

Saint Catherine Laboure was born on May 2, 1806 in Burgundy, France and died on December 31, 1876.  She entered the Daughters of Charity convent and later had numerous visits from the Blessed Virgin Mary.  The Blessed Virgin asked Saint Catherine to create a medal devoted to the Blessed Mother.  This medal became known as the Miraculous Medal and is worn today by millions of Christians around the world.

Saint Catherine as a Child

Saint Catherine was the ninth child of the eleven children of her parents.  Saint Catherine’s mother passed away when Catherine was nine years old.  The two youngest children, Tonine and Catherine went to live with their aunt in the village of Saint-Remy.  Saint Catherine developed a strong love for the Blessed Virgin after her mother died.  After her mother was buried, Saint Catherine took a statue of the Blessed Mother in her hand saying, “Now you will be my mother.”

Saint Catherine’s Visions

V      Saint Catherine’s visions of the Blessed Virgin began on July 18, 1830 when she heard a child calling her name.  Saint Catherine heard the Blessed Mother say, “God whishes to charge you with a mission.  You will be contradicted, but do not fear; you will have the grace to do what is necessary.  Tell your spiritual director all that passes within you.  Times are evil in France and in the world.”

V      November 27, 1830 – The Blessed Virgin appeared to Saint Catherine once again.  The apparition of Mary appeared inside an oval shaped frame.  She stood upon the earth and wore many colored rings.  Some of the rings emitted rays of light.  Around the edges of the frame were the words, “O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.”  The frame also depicted twelve stars in a circle and the letter M intertwined in the cross.  This apparition became the Miraculous Medal.

Saint Catherine Honored

The fact that Saint Catherine was the one who the Blessed Virgin appeared to about the Miraculous Medal was kept a secret for years.  She remained the simple, humble sister she always was.  Today, Catholics honor Saint Catherine by wearing a Saint Catherine medal or a Saint Catherine necklace.  Catholics will always be thankful to Saint Catherine for her devotion to the Blessed Virgin and revealing her visions to the world.  Wearing a Saint Catherine pendant is a wonderful way to thank this truly humble saint.

Prayer to St. Catherine of Laboure

O Lord Jesus Christ, You were pleased to gladden the holy Virgin Catherine by the wonderful apparition of Your Immaculate Mother. Grant that we may follow the example of the same saint in honouring Your most holy Mother with filial devotion and obtain the joy of eternal life. Amen.
