Saint Catherine Laboure was born on May 2, 1806 in Burgundy, France and died on December 31, 1876. She entered the Daughters of Charity convent and later had numerous visits from the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Blessed Virgin asked Saint Catherine to create a medal devoted to the Blessed Mother. This medal became known as the Miraculous Medal and is worn today by millions of Christians around the world.
Saint Catherine as a Child
Saint Catherine was the ninth child of the eleven children of her parents. Saint Catherine’s mother passed away when Catherine was nine years old. The two youngest children, Tonine and Catherine went to live with their aunt in the village of Saint-Remy. Saint Catherine developed a strong love for the Blessed Virgin after her mother died. After her mother was buried, Saint Catherine took a statue of the Blessed Mother in her hand saying, “Now you will be my mother.”
