St. Bridget of Sweden

Saint Bridget of Sweden

Saint Bridget is the most revered saint of Sweden.  She was born in approximately 1303 and died on July 23, 1373.

Saint Bridget’s father, Birger Persson, was the governor of Uppland and Ingeborg Bengtsdotter.  He was a wealthy landowner in Sweden and very pious.  Birger Persson made sure his daughter, Bridget, was carefully taught the Christian faith.  From the time Saint Bridget was seven years old, she displayed unusual religious illuminations and understanding.

Saint Bridget Married

Saint Bridget was married to eighteen years old, Ulf Gudmarsson in 1316, when she was only thirteen years old.  They were happily married and became the parents of eight children.  One of their children eventually became St. Catherine of Sweden.

Saint Bridget’s Saintly Life

Saint Bridget was known throughout the countryside for her works of mercy and charity.  She kept company with the clergy of the area including, the Bishop of Linkoping and her confessor Peter, Prior of Alvastra.  St. Bridget also made a pilgrimage with her husband to Santiago de Compostella.  Her husband became severely ill on the trip but recovered enough to finish the trip.  He died a short time later in 1344.

Saint Bridget Widow

After the death of her husband, Saint Bridget immersed herself into religious practices.  She began to have visions and Jesus Christ appeared to her.  Saint Bridget wrote down the details of her visions and Matthias Magister and Prior Peter translated the revelations into Latin.

The Brigittines

The Order of St. Saviour, also known as the Brigittines was a religious congregation founded by Saint Bridget of Sweden.  Saint Bridget traveled to Rome in 1349 to get confirmation from the pope for her congregation.  She remained in Rome until her death.  Saint Bridget was canonized a saint on October 7, 1391.

Honoring Saint Bridget

Today’s Christians honor Saint Bridget and her charitable works by wearing the Saint Bridget medal as a reminder of all she accomplished in her life.  Christians ask for her intercession in asking for the mercy and grace of Jesus Christ who spoke to her personally.  Wearing a Saint Bridget necklace is an ideal way for believers to become closer to Jesus just as Saint Bridget did.
