St. Apollonia

Martyrdom of St. Apollonia

Saint Apollonia lived in Alexandria during the time of persecution of the Christians.  She was one of many virgins who suffered martyrdom in 249 A.D.  It is said that the torture and martyrdom of Saint Apollonia included shattering or pulling out all her teeth.

Because of the way she died, she was named St. Apollonia Patron Saint of Dentistry and dental problems.

St Apollonia Patron Saint

During the final reign of Emperor Philip the Arab in 249 A.D. the mobs of Alexandria brutally persecuted the Christian.  They were driven by the prophesies of a popular poet of the time who said there would be a great calamity.  The mobs believed the Christians would be the cause of the disaster, so they committed grave murders and tortures to the Christians.  The rulers of Alexandria did nothing to protect the Christians.

Saint Apollonia, along with other virgins, did not seek death by martyrdom, but they were willing to accept their fate to keep their chastity and serve the Lord.  They remained true to their faith in Jesus Christ, never renouncing their faith or their vow of chastity.  Saint Apollonia and the other virgin martyrs of the time are highly honored in the Catholic Church.

Saint Apollonia Venerated

The Feast Day of Saint Apollonia is celebrated on February 9.  Many Catholics ask her blessings and wear a Saint Apollonia medal or Saint Apollonia necklace on her feast day, asking her to ward off any ailment of the teeth.  Catholic parents often give their children a Saint Apollonia charm or pendant to wear each day to prevent problems with their teeth and gums.

St. Apollonia Prayer

O Glorious Apollonia, patron saint of dentistry and refuge to all those suffering from diseases of the teeth, I consecrate myself to thee to number me among thy clients.  Assist me by your intercession with God in my daily work and intercede with Him to obtain for me a happy death.  Pray that my heart, like thine may be inflamed with the love of Jesus and Mary, through Christ our Lord.  Amen.  O my God, bring me safe through temptation and strengthen me as thou didst our own patron Apollonia, through Christ our Lord.  Amen.
