Saint Anastasia Patron Saint of Widows

Saint Anastasia was born who was martyred in Sirmium.  There is not much recorded about the life of Saint Anastasia but it is said that she was martyred during the persecution of Diocletian in 304 AD.  It is believed that she was a Roman citizen.

Saint Anastasia is venerated in both the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church.  She is honored as a healer and an exorcist.  Saint Anastasia is also noted for being the patron saint of widows, weavers, and martyrs.  She is often depicted holding a palm branch.

Prayer to Saint Anastasia

O Anastasia, Holy martyr, I am near you, help me to pray. You who know what I and those near me need; intercede for my urgent needs, my spiritual and material wants.  I confide in you and entrust all to your loving care. Offer up to Jesus that tender and constant care that you bore Him here on earth. O Holy Anastasia, you who was martyred for the love of our Lord and faith, I beseech of you the grace to meditate on and live the Passion of Jesus and the sufferings of Holy Mary. Pray that I will be able to walk in the path of humility, simplicity, love and sacrifice, fulfilling at all times, and in all ways, the holy will of God. Let me live united with Jesus, the Blessed Virgin and you, for all eternity.  Amen.

Saint Anastasia for Today’s Catholics

Saint Anastasia is mentioned in the second Mass on Christmas Day.  She is one of the few women mentioned during the Mass.  Her commemoration during the celebration of the Mass makes her a well known name to all Catholics.

A Saint Anastasia medal is a popular gift for religious ceremonies and is often worn by Christians to honor this young martyr.  A Saint Anastasia necklace is also often given to a widow for comfort in her time of sorrow.  Saint Anastasia patron of widows offers support and peace to a grieving widow.
