St. Alexandra

 Saint Alexandra the Martyr

St. Alexandra kept her Christian beliefs a secret from her husband, Emperor Diocletian. He was a cruel persecutor of the Christians, torturing and killing them in the arena. St. Alexandra was inspired by the faith and courage of St. George when he was being tortured in the arena by her husband in the arena for professing his faith in Jesus Christ.

St. Alexandra went to St. George and openly declared her belief in Jesus. Her husband, Diocletian, was enraged by his wife’s confession and ordered that both she and St. George should be beheaded.

 St Alexandria Patron Saint

As St. Alexandra was being brought to her execution, she asked a guard if she could stop and rest. He allowed her to rest and as she leaned against the wall, she died peacefully on April 21, 303.

Two days after St. Alexandra’s death, St. George was beheaded and 630 other people who converted to Christianity while witnessing St. George’s martyrdom were also killed.

A Prayer for Martyred Saints

O Lord, by the sufferings of the Saints, which they endured for thy sake, have compassion and heal all the sufferings of us who implore Thee, who alone art the lover of mankind.

 St Alexandra Remembered

St. Alexandra is still remembered today for her faith and courage, declaring her faith in Jesus Christ during a time of Christian persecution. Today, Christians wear a St. Alexandra medal or a St. Alexandra pendant, declaring their faith openly just as St. Alexandra did.

Many girls are named Alexandra after St. Alexandra in the hopes of passing on some of her courage and faithfulness on to the newborn girl. Christians give the gift of a St. Alexandra charm or a St. Alexandra necklace for Baptisms, First Communions, and Confirmations, especially if a girl takes Alexandra as a Confirmation name.

The strength of St. Alexandra has not been forgotten.
