Blessed Caroline Gerhardinger

Saint Caroline Gerhardinger

Blessed Caroline whose parents belonged to the working class of Bavaria was born on June 20, 1797.  She was taught by the Canonesses of St. Augustine.  She continued with her studies until 1809 when the Bavarian government closed all religious orders.

Saint Caroline Founded the Sisters of Notre Dame

After the government closed the religious orders, Blessed Caroline devoted herself to beginning a new order that would be dedicated to Jesus Christ and Christian education.  The Vatican received concessions from the Bavarian government in 1828, reopening many religious orders.

Saint Caroline and a number of other nuns relocated to a convent that was repaired and she began the order she had been dreaming of.  The religious order she founded was the School Sisters of Notre Dame.

Saint Caroline Took a New Name

Saint Caroline changed her name to Teresa for her religious life.  Shortly after taking the name Teresa, she became known as Teresa of Jesus because of her adoration to the presence of the body and blood of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.  Saint Caroline spent the rest of her life devoted to teaching Catholic education.  She died on May 9, 1879.

Saint Caroline was beatified on November 17, 1985 by Pope John Paul II.

The Sisters of Notre Dame received Vatican approval on January 23, 1854.  Since that time, this order of sisters has spread throughout the world.

Saint Caroline Today

Saint Caroline is remembered today by all the Sisters of Notre Dame and the school children who are taught by this order.  School children beginning their Catholic education are often given a gift of a Saint Caroline medal, Saint Caroline charm, or a Saint Caroline pendant in remembrance of her.

A Saint Caroline necklace also makes an ideal gift for a student graduating from a Catholic School run by the Sisters of Notre Dame.  Consider a Saint Caroline medal as a gift to one of the Sisters of Notre Dame who taught a son or daughter in school.
