St. Walter of Pontnoise

 Patron Saint Walter of Pontnoise

Saint Walter of Pontnoise, also referred to as Walter Gautier, was a Benedictine priest who was also a professor of rhetoric and philosophy.  King Philip I named Saint Walter the Abbot of Pontnoise.  Saint Walter didn’t really want this position because he entered the monastery to get away from the temptations of the world.

 Patron Saint Walter of Pontnoise

Saint Walter of Pontnoise ran away from the Abbey many times, trying to escape the position the King had put him in.  Saint Walter even went to the Pope, giving him a handwritten resignation but Pope Gregory VII ordered him to return to Rebais-en-Brie and continue there as Abbott.

Saint Walter returned to his duties as Abbot, trying to bring discipline to the irresponsible, sinful clergy in his charge.  He fought the corrupt and was beaten for his efforts and thrown in prison.  Eventually, Saint Walter was set free and continued his duties as Abbot.  He prayed constantly for the knowledge and strength to correct the wrongs of Rebais-en-Brie.

Patron Saint of Prisoners, Prisoners of War, and Job Stress

Saint Walter of Pontnoise died in 1099 on Good Friday.  After being canonized a saint, he was named the patron saint of prisoners because he had been a prisoner himself.  Not only was Saint Walter physically imprisoned, he was also imprisoned in a position he did not want.  No matter what he did, Saint Walter was unable to escape from the King’s or the Pope’s orders to be the Abbot of Pontnoise.

The only refuge Saint Walter Pontnoise found was in his daily prayers in the chapel.  Many people who have Saint Walter as a patron saint, feeling imprisoned in their daily lives, wear a Saint Walter Pontnoise medal or a Saint Walter Pontnoise pendant.  They pray for the intercession of Saint Walter, hoping to gain the wisdom and strength to carry on.
