St. Vincent Ferrer

 About Saint Vincent Ferrer

  • Saint Vincent Ferrer was born on January 23, 1350 and died on April 5, 1419.  His father, William Ferrer, was an Englishman who immigrated to Spain.  His mother’s name was Constantia Miguel.  It is said that during labor in the birth of Saint Vincent, his mother felt no pain.
  • As a young man, Saint Vincent Ferrer fasted two days a week and was devoted to the Passion of Jesus Christ.  He did charitable works for the needy.

  • Saint Vincent decided to enter the Dominican Order at the age of eighteen.  His studies included theology and philosophy.  While he was in the monastery, he practiced acts of penance and prayed daily.  Within three years, Saint Vincent had memorized all of Scripture.
  • Saint Vincent Ferrer earned the title of Sacred Master of Theology and travelled, giving lectures in philosophy and theology.
  • Saint Vincent Ferrer continued his studies in Barcelona at the University of Lleida.  He was awarded a doctorate in theology.
  • Saint Vincent said that God instructed him to go out and convert people to Christianity.  For the next twenty-one years, Saint Vincent spread God’s word in Castile, Aragon, Switzerland, Italy, France, England, Scotland, and Ireland.  He also converted many Jews to Catholicism.
  • On June 3, 1455, Saint Vincent Ferrer was canonized a saint by Pope Calixtus III.  The feast of Saint Vincent Ferrer is celebrated on April 5.
  • The Fraternity of Saint Vincent Ferrer was named in his honor.

Many Catholics today wear a Saint Vincent Ferrer medal or a Saint Vincent Ferrer necklace to honor this great Dominican missionary.  Wearing a Saint Vincent Ferrer pendant reminds all Catholics to go out and spread the words of Jesus Christ every day. The Saint Vincent Ferrer medal is also a reminder to reciting a prayer to Saint Vincent Ferrer, asking for his intercession for a strong Catholic faith.
