About Saint Victor of Marseilles

 Saint Victor of Marseilles lived during the third century.  He was an officer in the Roman army, stationed in Marseilles.  Saint Victor refused to worship pagan idols which resulted in his arrest and judgment by Asterius and Eutychius, the Roman prefects.

The two prefects sent Saint Victor to Emperor Maximian for sentencing.  Saint Victor was tortured on the rack, severely beaten, and then dragged through the town.  He was then

While in prison, Saint Victor converted three Roman soldiers to Christianity.  They were Longinus, Alexander, and Felician.  All three of the converts became Christian martyrs and saints.  Saint Victor of Marseilles also suffered martyrdom by the crushing weight of a millstone and beheading.  The feast of Saint Victor of Marseilles is celebrated on July 21.

Saint Victor is often depicted in art with one foot on a millstone, near a windmill, or with angels saving him from a raging river.

Saint Victor’s Abbey

A monastery was erected by St. John Cassian during the fourth century.  It was built at the location where Saint Victor and the other three Roman soldiers were martyred.  The monastery later became a Benedictine Abby, named St. Victor’s Abbey.

Many Catholics make pilgrimages to St. Victor’s Abby which is located at Marseilles in Southern France.  The original Benedictine Abby is not in use today but the Church of St. Victor is still used.  In 1934, the Church of St. Victor was named a minor basilica by Pope Pius XI.

This is a popular pilgrimage for Christians who go to pray for the intercession of Saint Victor of Marseilles and the other Christian martyrs.  They wear a Saint Victor medal or a Saint Victor pendant in honor of this early Christian martyr.  Wearing a Saint Victor necklace is a reminder to remain true to the Christian faith and spread the Good News of Jesus Christ every day.
