St. Thomas More

About Saint Thomas More

Saint Thomas More was born in 1478 in London.  He was a brilliant man, studying the classics, theology, and law at Oxford University.  St. Thomas More earned a law degree at Oxford and had an illustrious legal career in the Parliament.

Saint Thomas More Family Man

Saint Thomas More married the love of his life, Jane Colt in 1505.  They had four children but Jane died while still young.  Saint Thomas More then married Alice Middleton, mostly to be the mother of his four children.

Saint Thomas More

 Saint Thomas More Lord Chancellor

In 1529, King Henry VIII named Saint Thomas More, Lord Chancellor.  By 1532, he resigned his post as Lord Chancellor because he did not agree with King Henry’s views on marriage and the power of the Pope.

Saint Thomas More Imprisoned

After giving up the post of Lord Chancellor, Saint Thomas More dedicated himself to defending the Church with his writings.  He refused to acknowledge that King Henry VIII was the head of the Church of England and was imprisoned in the Tower of London, along with his friend, St. John Fisher.  They remained imprisoned for fifteen months.

St. John Fisher was executed and nine days later Saint Thomas More was convicted of treason.  Saint Thomas More remained true to his belief in God and the Church of England and declared to the court, “We may yet hereafter in heaven merrily all meet together to everlasting salvation.”

Saint Thomas More Martyr

Saint Thomas More faced his executioners on July 6, 1535.  His final words were, “The King’s good servant but God’s first.”  King Henry VIII had Saint Thomas More beheaded.  The feast of Saint Thomas More is celebrated on June 22.

Saint Thomas More Remembered

Saint Thomas More is remembered by Catholics and the Church of England today as a brilliant philosopher, lawyer, and man of God.  Many Catholics wear a Saint Thomas More medal or a Saint Thomas More pendant in honor of this great Renaissance man who gave his life for his Church and his God.
