St. Sebastian

About Saint Sebastian

Saint Sebastian was born at Narbonne, Gaul in 256 A.D. and died as a martyr in 288 A.D.  He was martyred during the time of Diocletian’s persecution of Christians.

Saint Sebastian Shot with Arrows

Saint Sebastian was a soldier in the Roman army around 283 A.D.  He was the captain of the Praetorian guards under Emperor Diocletian.  Saint Sebastian converted many of the soldiers to Christianity.  Soon, Diocletian heard about the fact that Saint Sebastian was a Christian.  He had Saint Sebastian tied to a post and shot with many arrows.  Saint Sebastian was left for dead, his body riddled with arrows.  Saint Irene, a widow in the area, went to the bleeding body of Saint Sebastian and found him still alive.  She brought him to her home and nursed his wounds until he recovered.

Saint Sebastian Rebuked Diocletian

After his recovery, Saint Sebastian preached against Diocletian’s persecution of Christians.  Once again, Diocletian captured Saint Sebastian and order him stoned to death on January 20, 287 A.D.  In 367 A.D., a basilica was erected over the grave of Saint Sebastian.

Saint Sebastian Today

Saint Sebastian continues to be revered today for his part in defending Christianity and persecuted Christians.  He is honored for keeping the faith and remaining true to Jesus Christ even when he suffered such horrendous tortures.

Many Catholics wear a Saint Sebastian medal or a Saint Sebastian pendant asking the saint for the strength to remain steadfast in their own faith.  Many Christian men wear a Saint Sebastian necklace as a reminder to be courageous and strong for their Christian faith.
