 Saint Richard Biography
  • V Saint Richard was born in Wyche, Worcestershire, England.  He became an orphan of a gentry family and worked on his brother’s farm.
  • V The brother of St. Richard offered him a marriage arrangement and land but Richard refused.  He decided to dedicate his life to the church and his studies.
  • V Saint Richard studied at Oxford and taught at the university.  He eventually became the chancellor.  He also studied in Bologna and Paris.
  • V Saint Richard became the
    chancellor of Canterbury in 1235.
  • V Saint Richard was a supporter of Archbishop Edmund Rich who was in exile.  He also supported the power of the Pope over the king.

  • V In 1244, Saint Richard became Bishop of Chichester.  He was at odds with the king over legal powers in the same was as Archbishop Edmund.
  • V As bishop, Saint Richard worked at the reformation of the morals of his priests and bishops.  He introduced more structure and reverence to Church services and often overruled King Henry.  At one time, Saint Richard defrocked a priest who was accused of sexual acts.  King Henry petitioned Richard to reinstate the priest but he refused.
  • V Saint Richard imposed harsh penances on knights who abused members of the clergy.
  • V Saint Richard died on April 3, 1253 after dedicating the St. Edmund’s Chapel in Dover.
  • V Saint Richard was canonized in 1262 by Pope Urban IV.  The feast of Saint Richard is celebrated on April 3.
  • V King Henry ordered his men to dismantle the St. Richard’s Shrine and remove his relics.  The shrine was re-established in the nineteenth century.
 Saint Richard Remembered

Saint Richard is remembered today, especially by the Anglo-Catholics in England.  Many people wear a Saint Richard medal or a Saint Richard pendant in honor of this saint who had the courage to defy a king in order to protect his clergy.  Wearing a Saint Richard necklace reminds all Christians to have the courage to defend their faith, being faithful to God forever.
