St. Philip Neri

St. Philip Neri Biography

St. Philip Neri was born in Florence, Italy of a lawyer father and a mother of Italian nobility dedicated to public service, a trait that would set the course of his life work. He was educated by the Dominican friars and at the age of eighteen went for training as a merchant in a town near Naples. He did well in his merchant training and was well received by all, but he decided he did not care about things of the world so he moved to Rome. Likewise today, a St. Philip Neri medal makes a thoughtful gift to someone who lives with a minimal concern about material things of this world.

St. Philip Neri Layman

The life of St. Philip Neri followed an unusual journey once he reached Rome. He accepted a job as tutor for two young men at extremely meager wages. When not attending to his tutorial role, he walked the streets of Rome with joy greeting, talking with and encouraging all to draw closer to God, especially the weak, the sick and the poor. Years of such concern and ministering to the downcast earned St. Philip Neri the title “Apostle of Rome”. A St. Philip Neri pendant on chain makes a nice St. Philip Neri necklace for that person that consistently shows care and concern for the downtrodden.

 Congregation of the Oratory

St. Philip Neri spent 18 years in layman missionary work in the hospitals and streets of Rome. The life of St Philip Neri changed dramatically in 1556, five years after his priestly ordination in 1551 at the age of thirty six. St. Philip began some evening meetings in Oratory hall consisting of prayers, music, scripture, hymns and discussions. Participants would follow through with missionary work, preaching and hearing confessions throughout all parts of the city of Rome. Other regions and eventually other nations copied this style to the extent that the Congregation of the Oratory emerged. This is a priestly fraternity very loosely organized for communal living by the priests. Each oratory is self-governing with voluntary participation and members are free to leave the setting at any time.
