St. Peter the Apostle

 About  Saint Peter

St. Peter the Apostle was born in Bethsaida, located on Lake Genesareth.  He was the son of Jona and the brother of the Apostle Philip.  His birth name was Simon.  Andrew the Apostle also lived in this town.

Saint Peter Moves to Capharnaum

Saint Peter moved to Capharnaum where he bought a house and lived with his mother-in-law.  This was around 26-28 A.D. at the time Jesus began his public preaching.  Saint Peter married and had children.  According to Clement of Alexandria, St. Peter’s wife suffered martyrdom.  Saint Peter, then still known as Simon, made his living as a fisherman and owned his own boat.

Saint Peter Meets Jesus

Saint Peter and his brother, Andrew, were interested in the preaching of St. John the Baptist on the banks of the Jordan River.  While they were listening to St. John, they saw him point to Jesus saying, “Behold the Lamb of God.”  Andrew followed Jesus and stayed with Him for a day.

Andrew returned home and told Saint Peter, “We have found the Messias.”  At that point, Andrew took Saint Peter to meet Jesus.  Jesus spoke to Saint Peter, saying, “Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is interpreted Peter.”

Saint Peter the Apostle

Saint Peter and the other Apostles stayed with Jesus, going with Him to Galilee, Judaea, Jerusalem, and Samaria.  When they returned to Galilee, Saint Peter continued working as a fisherman for a short while.  He then became a permanent Apostle of Jesus.  Both Saint Peter and Andrew were fishing when Jesus talked to them, “Come ye after me, and I will make you to be fishers of men.”

From that time, Saint Peter remained at the side of Jesus and preached about the kingdom of God.  He was with Jesus at the Sermon on the Mount and Jesus cured his mother-in-law who became ill.

Saint Peter Stands Out from the Twelve Apostles

Saint Peter displays his inward love of Jesus, his great fidelity, and strong faith.  He is full of enthusiasm, although is sometimes influenced by the problems he faces.  Many times, Jesus speaks directly to Saint Peter and he answers for all the Apostles.

When Jesus began preaching about His Body and Blood, many disciples abandoned Him.  Jesus asked the twelve Apostles if they would leave also.  Saint Peter answered, “Lord to whom shall we go?  Thou has words of eternal life.  And we have believed and have known, that thou art the Holy One of God.”

Saint Peter the Prince of the Apostles

Jesus held Saint Peter above the other Apostles.  After Saint Peter revealed that he believed Jesus was the Messiah, Jesus told Saint Peter that he would be the head of His church.  Jesus told Saint Peter,

“Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-Jona: because flesh and blood hath not revealed it to thee, but my Father who is in heaven.  And I say to thee:  That thou art Peter and upon this rock, I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.  And I will give to thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven.  And whatsoever thou shalt bind upon earthm, it shall be bound also in heaven, and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth, it shall be loosed also in heaven.”

 Saint Peter the Apostle Revered

Saint Peter the Apostle is the most well known disciple of Jesus.  The Popes of the Catholic Church take the place of Saint Peter on earth as the head of Christ’s church.

Many Catholics wear a Saint Peter medal or a Saint Peter pendant as a reminder to live a life of faith in Jesus.  They look toward Saint Peter to strengthen their faith and their belief in the words of Jesus Christ.
